Child Safety Commitment

Donvale Primary School is committed to the safety and wellbeing of all children and young people. Child safety is the primary focus of our care, decision-making and everyday practice.

 

Donvale Primary School has zero tolerance for child abuse. We are committed to providing a child safe environment where children and young people feel safe, are listened to, and are encouraged to share their views about matters that affect them.

 

We pay particular attention to the cultural safety of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, children from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, children with a disability, and all students who may be vulnerable.

 

Everyone involved in Donvale Primary School has a responsibility to understand the important role they play — individually and collectively — in ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all children and young people.

 

In our planning, decision-making and operations, Donvale Primary School will:

  • take a preventative, proactive and participatory approach to child safety

  • value and empower children to participate in decisions that affect their lives

  • foster a culture of openness that supports safe disclosure of concerns

  • respect diversity while keeping child safety paramount

  • provide clear guidance on appropriate conduct and behaviour towards children

  • engage only suitable staff and volunteers, with appropriate supervision and professional learning

  • ensure children know who to talk to if they feel worried or unsafe

  • report suspected abuse, neglect or mistreatment promptly to the appropriate authorities

  • share information lawfully when a child’s safety or wellbeing is at risk

  • value and communicate regularly with families and carers

Preventing and Responding to Racism

Racism is not tolerated at Donvale Primary School.

 

Donvale Primary School is committed to fostering a welcoming, inclusive environment where racism is not tolerated. Racism harms students’ mental health, learning and sense of belonging. We celebrate the diversity of cultures, ethnicities and faiths of all our students. It is up to all of us at Donvale Primary School to make our school a place that is free of racism and where everyone feels respected and can learn in a safe and inclusive environment.

 

What Donvale Primary School is doing to prevent racism

 

Donvale Primary School follows the Department of Education’s Preventing and Addressing Racism in Schools Policy. We are building a culturally safe school with inclusive learning for everyone by working with staff, students, families, carers and communities. We will:

  • provide programs that teach about and celebrate diversity, inclusion and the impact of racism to build understanding and empathy

  • use practices that support all students to thrive

  • implement anti-racism efforts to prevent and address racism effectively

  • make sure everyone feels safe, with clear and accessible pathways to report racism

  • take your report seriously and act quickly
