At Donvale Primary School, Physical Education plays an important role in supporting students’ health, wellbeing and confidence. Through positive and inclusive movement experiences, students develop physical skills, build self-belief and learn the value of being active.
Our Physical Education program is designed so that every child can participate, improve and enjoy movement, regardless of ability or experience.
All students participate in weekly Physical Education lessons, where learning is active, engaging and developmentally appropriate. Lessons focus on building skills through:
play-based activities and games
movement awareness and coordination
gymnastics and body control
ball handling and fundamental movement skills
Across all year levels, the emphasis is on:
skill acquisition and development
participation for all students
positive attitudes towards physical activity
enjoyment and confidence in movement
In Prep to Year 2, students focus on developing Fundamental Motor Skills, including:
running, jumping and dodging
throwing, catching and kicking
striking and ball bouncing
These skills are explicitly taught and practised, then applied in modified games and activities. Students also engage in basic dance and gymnastics, supporting balance, coordination and body awareness.
As students progress through Years 3 to 6, Physical Education continues to build on foundational skills while introducing more complex movement and game-based activities.
Students are supported to:
refine movement skills
work cooperatively with others
develop resilience and persistence
build confidence through practice and participation
Learning remains inclusive and supportive, with a strong focus on personal improvement and enjoyment.
Physical Education at Donvale Primary School is supported by specialist movement programs that enhance student learning.
All students from Prep to Year 5 participate in an annual intensive swimming program at Aqualink Box Hill. This program supports water safety, confidence and skill development in a safe and structured environment.
Students also participate in a five-week intensive gymnastics program delivered by BTYC, supporting strength, flexibility, balance and coordination.
Throughout the year, students may also participate in school-based sporting clinics and movement experiences delivered by external providers. These sessions introduce students to a variety of activities and help build enthusiasm and confidence in physical activity.
From time to time, students also enjoy visits from special sporting guests, which inspire motivation and excitement for healthy movement.
Through Physical Education, students develop:
physical competence and confidence
positive attitudes towards movement
cooperation and respect for others
enjoyment of being active
Our goal is for students to leave Donvale Primary School with the skills, confidence and motivation to lead active and healthy lives.
