At Donvale Primary School, Performing Arts is a joyful and inclusive part of school life. Through music, movement and drama, students develop confidence, creativity and self-expression, while learning the value of collaboration and practice.
Performing Arts lessons take place each week and provide students with opportunities to sing, move, act and play instruments in a fun and supportive environment.
Performing Arts learning is active and engaging. Students explore:
singing and vocal expression
movement and dance
drama and role play
playing tuned and untuned instruments
Lessons often include body percussion, movement and hands-on music-making, helping students develop rhythm, coordination, listening skills and confidence.
We believe all students can enjoy and succeed in Performing Arts, and learning experiences are designed to be welcoming and accessible for every child.
Students have the opportunity to extend their interest in music through a range of inclusive musical groups.
Junior Choir (Years 1–3) rehearses on Thursdays
Senior Choir (Years 3–6) rehearses on Fridays during lunchtime
Our choirs are unauditioned, and all students are welcome to join. Students are encouraged to commit for at least a term, learning the value of practice, teamwork and perseverance. Choirs perform regularly at assemblies, Open Day and community events.
Students may also choose to participate in our much-loved Marimba Band, which rehearses on Wednesdays during lunchtime. This group provides students with the opportunity to develop ensemble skills and experience the joy of making music together.
Wherever possible, students are given opportunities to perform and share their learning. Performances may take place at:
school assemblies
Open Nights
community events
local kindergartens and childcare centres
These experiences help students build confidence, pride and a sense of connection with the wider community.
Every two years, the entire school comes together to create a whole-school stage production. All students are involved on stage, contributing to a shared creative experience.
The production is performed over two nights in a large venue, allowing students to experience performing in a professional theatre setting. This much-anticipated event generates excitement and pride across the school community and is a highlight for students, staff and families alike.
Donvale Primary School offers access to private instrumental and performing arts tuition during the school day through experienced external tutors.
A wide range of options may be available, including:
recorder
percussion and marimba
guitar
drums
keyboard
woodwind and brass
dance
drama
Tuition may be offered in individual or small group sessions, with opportunities for lunchtime rehearsals and participation in school rock bands.
