At Donvale Primary School, numeracy enrichment plays an important role in developing rich mathematical thinking, problem solving and collaboration. Through a range of engaging opportunities, students are encouraged to think deeply, explain their reasoning, work together and apply their learning in meaningful ways.
These experiences complement our daily mathematics program and support the development of the four mathematical proficiencies: understanding, fluency, problem solving and reasoning.
Our enrichment opportunities are designed to extend learning beyond the classroom and allow students to:
explore challenging and unfamiliar problems
collaborate with others to test ideas and strategies
explain and justify their thinking
develop persistence and resilience when faced with challenge
These experiences help students see mathematics as something to explore, discuss and enjoy.
Students at Donvale Primary School have opportunities to participate in a range of mathematics competitions and challenges that promote higher-order thinking and engagement.
Selected students participate in KSF and AMC Maths competitions, where they work through rich mathematical problems that require reasoning, collaboration and creative thinking. These challenges encourage students to apply their skills in unfamiliar contexts and deepen their understanding of mathematical concepts.
Students in Years 5 and 6 may participate in Maths Olympiad, a program that focuses on complex problem solving and mathematical reasoning. Working individually and collaboratively, students develop confidence in tackling challenging problems and explaining their thinking.
Strong number fact knowledge supports success across all areas of mathematics. Students have opportunities to build fluency and automaticity through engaging events such as Times Table Rock Stars multiplication and division tournaments.
These tournaments motivate students to practise regularly, track their progress and celebrate improvement, while fostering a positive and enthusiastic approach to learning number facts.
We value strong partnerships with families and provide opportunities for parents and carers to engage with mathematics learning through:
Family Maths Nights
whole-school numeracy events
These experiences promote positive conversations about mathematics and help build a shared understanding of how maths is taught and learned at Donvale Primary School.
Through enrichment activities, competitions and shared events, we celebrate effort, growth and achievement in mathematics. Students are encouraged to feel proud of their learning and confident in their ability to think mathematically, solve problems and work collaboratively.
These experiences help students see mathematics as something to enjoy, explore and value — both in and beyond the classroom.
