At Donvale Primary School, learning a language is about much more than words — it is about connection, culture and understanding the world. Through Mandarin, students develop communication skills, cultural awareness and confidence as global citizens.
We believe learning another language helps children become more flexible thinkers, strengthens overall learning, and builds curiosity about people and cultures beyond their own.
Our students are growing up in a global community, where understanding different languages and cultures is increasingly important. Learning Mandarin supports students to:
communicate in another language
develop intercultural understanding
appreciate cultural diversity
build confidence in new learning
Learning a language alongside English also supports higher-order thinking skills, including memory, problem solving and reflection.
Mandarin learning at Donvale Primary School is taught through an integrated approach, where language and culture are learned together.
Students are supported to:
listen, speak and respond in Mandarin
explore cultural traditions and celebrations
make connections between language, culture and everyday life
reflect on similarities and differences between cultures
Lessons are interactive, engaging and age-appropriate, helping students feel confident to participate and have a go.
Our Mandarin learning space is designed to be vibrant and inviting, reflecting the language and culture being studied. Visual displays and hands-on resources support students to engage with learning in meaningful ways.
Students regularly share their learning through presentations, performances and creative projects, helping build confidence and pride in their achievements.
Mandarin learning is enriched through a range of cultural experiences, which may include:
exploring Chinese traditions and celebrations
visiting cultural performances
participating in language and cultural awareness programs
These experiences bring learning to life and deepen students’ understanding of Mandarin language and culture.
Students also have the opportunity to participate in the Chinese Hand Drum group, which performs at school events throughout the year. This much-loved activity allows students to connect with culture through music and movement, while building teamwork, confidence and joy.
Through learning Mandarin, students develop:
respect for different cultures
curiosity about the world
empathy and open-mindedness
confidence communicating beyond their first language
These skills support students not only in language learning, but across all areas of learning and in everyday life.
Families are encouraged to speak with their child’s teacher if they have questions about Mandarin learning or enrichment opportunities. We value strong partnerships with families in supporting language learning and cultural understanding.
Our students are a part of a global community where the need to gain skills of intercultural competence is paramount.
