At Donvale Primary School, we understand that starting school is a big milestone for young children — and for their families. The transition from kindergarten to primary school can bring excitement, curiosity and sometimes a few nerves too.
Our Step Into Prep program is designed to help children feel comfortable, confident and happy in a school environment, supporting a positive and gentle start to their school journey.
Step Into Prep is a series of welcoming sessions for four-year-old kindergarten children who are still attending kinder. The program gives children the opportunity to:
experience what a school morning feels like
spend time in Prep classrooms
meet teachers and other children
explore parts of the school in a relaxed and supportive way
Sessions are play-based, nurturing and age-appropriate, helping children build familiarity with school life at their own pace.
There will be:
two Step Into Prep sessions during Term 1, and
three Step Into Prep sessions during Term 2
These sessions are designed to gradually build children’s confidence and comfort in a school setting.
Children do not need to be enrolled at Donvale Primary School to attend Step Into Prep.
The program is:
free of charge
open to all four-year-old kindergarten children in the local area
designed to support families as they explore school options
Step Into Prep sessions take place in our Prep classrooms, giving children an authentic experience of the learning environment.
During the sessions, children will:
participate in simple activities and play experiences
visit different areas of the school
begin to recognise familiar spaces and routines
Drop-off and pick-up will be from our Junior School building, which houses the Prep classrooms.
Parents and carers are very welcome to stay nearby, chat with other kinder families and get a feel for our school community.
To help us organise these sessions, places must be booked in advance.

Step Into Prep was very popular last year, so we encourage families to book early.
