At Donvale Primary School, we recognise that students learn at different rates and may need different levels of support at different times. Our approach to intervention is early, targeted and supportive, ensuring students receive the right help to build confidence and experience success.
Support is provided within a caring, inclusive environment where students feel safe, valued and encouraged to grow.
High-quality classroom teaching is the foundation of learning at Donvale Primary School. All teachers plan and teach using explicit, structured and evidence-informed practices, with learning carefully differentiated to meet the needs of individual students.
This includes:
clear explanation and modelling of new learning
guided practice and feedback
flexible grouping based on student needs
adjustments to support access and engagement
For some students, additional support is beneficial to help consolidate key skills and concepts.
Students who require extra support may receive Tier 2 intervention, delivered through small group instruction. This support is:
targeted to specific learning needs
time-limited and responsive
delivered alongside classroom learning
Small group intervention allows teachers to provide focused instruction and additional practice, helping students strengthen foundational skills and build confidence.
At Donvale Primary School, we use explicit, evidence-based literacy intervention programs to support students who are working below expected levels.
MiniLit is a structured, systematic reading intervention program for students in Years 1 and 2. It focuses on:
phonemic awareness
phonics and decoding
reading fluency
early comprehension
MiniLit is delivered in small groups and supports students to develop the essential skills needed for reading success.
MacqLit is an explicit, evidence-based reading intervention program for students in Years 3 and 4. It supports students to strengthen:
decoding and word recognition
spelling
comprehension
MacqLit helps students consolidate foundational reading skills while continuing to engage with age-appropriate learning.
Students are carefully monitored through regular assessment and teacher observation. Support is adjusted as students progress, ensuring intervention remains targeted and purposeful.
Families are informed when students participate in intervention programs, and teachers work closely with parents and carers to support learning both at school and at home.
Intervention at Donvale Primary School is about supporting progress, not labelling students. Our aim is to:
help students build strong foundations
develop confidence and independence
ensure all students can fully access classroom learning
We believe that with the right support at the right time, every student can succeed.
If you have questions about intervention or would like to discuss your child’s learning, we encourage you to speak with your child’s teacher. We value strong partnerships with families in supporting student growth and wellbeing.
